When you submit a description, the recommendation system uses filters and scent attributes to find relevant candidates in the library. An AI model then compares information such as notes, description, character, occasions, price, and descriptive keywords before returning a primary match and two alternatives. Recommendations can vary as the library, model, and matching process evolve.
Better than random. Worse than a nose. The AI has never smelled anything. What it knows about fragrances comes from structured data — notes, descriptions, and language used by perfumers and critics. It's good at matching mood, occasion, and character. It struggles when the distinction between two fragrances is subtle and sensory: a specific drydown, a texture, the way a note shifts on skin over hours.
The match score is a confidence estimate, not a guarantee of liking. A 91% match means the AI is highly confident the fragrance fits your description. It does not mean you'll love it — fragrance is too personal for that. Treat the result as a starting point: a name worth seeking out at a counter, not a verdict to buy blind.
Every recommendation comes from what's in the library. If a fragrance isn't in it, we can't recommend it — no matter how perfect the match might be. Each entry includes notes, concentration, price, seasons, occasions, sillage, longevity, and a set of keywords: descriptive phrases that map natural language to scent character. "Boardroom confident." "Rainy Sunday." "Something that doesn't announce itself." The keywords are what the AI primarily reads. A fragrance with thin keywords will rank lower than it deserves. One with rich keywords will surface when it should. We add new fragrances and improve keyword coverage regularly.
Olfome returns one primary match — the one it's most confident about — and two alternatives for comparison. Each comes with a match score, a plain-language explanation of why it fits your description, the scent's notes, its price, and a direct link to buy it.
If the first result isn't quite what you had in mind, tell it. "More subtle." "Less sweet." "Something less well-known." The conversation continues until you've found your scent.
Every result set has a "Share these matches" button that creates a permanent link — send it to a friend and they'll see exactly what the AI picked for you and why. Every perfume page has its own link too. No account needed on either end.
Olfome is free to use. We may earn revenue through referral links and commercial partnerships with retailers or brands.
When you click "Buy" and make a purchase, we may receive a commission from the retailer. Prices, availability, and link destinations can change, so check the retailer's page before purchasing.
The AI can make mistakes. Fragrance is personal, and a match score is not a guarantee that you will like a scent. Treat each recommendation as a starting point and test a fragrance on your skin when possible.
Short version: we don't collect much, and what we do collect we use only to run the service.
When you type a description and submit it, your words travel to our server and then to our AI provider — currently OpenAI, though we may also use Anthropic — which processes your query to generate recommendations. Our server records consultations for product review, including your description, prior queries used for refinement, recommendations, and a hashed network identifier. If you choose to share your matches, we also save that description and its recommendations so the shared link can work. Your recent conversation stays in your browser. When you refine a search, the conversation context is sent with your request to help generate the next recommendations.
When you report a broken buy link, we log the fragrance name and retailer. For that report, we collect no additional contact details — no account, no email address, no IP address attached to the report.
Olfome itself does not set cookies. We use browser localStorage to keep your recent searches within a session so refinements work. This data stays on your device and is never sent to us on its own — only when you submit a new search or refinement.
We do run ads to let people know Olfome exists. To measure whether those ads work, this site loads a Reddit advertising pixel, which may set cookies and share limited visit data (such as page visits and searches performed, never the text of your query) with Reddit. Reddit's own privacy policy governs that data. If you block third-party trackers, the site works exactly the same.
We use Google Analytics to measure search starts and completions, refinements, sharing, and retailer clicks. These events include campaign tags from links you visit, fragrance identifiers, and optional recommendation feedback, but not the text of your search. Campaign attribution is kept in your browser for the session. Analytics may be unavailable if you block tracking.
When you click a Buy link, you go to a retailer's website. That retailer has its own privacy policy and may set its own cookies. We may receive a commission if you make a purchase.
Search queries are processed by a third-party AI API — currently OpenAI's, though we may also use Anthropic's. We send only the text of your query — no name, no email, no IP address. The provider's own privacy policy governs how they handle API data.
